SEO Basics

Alrighty, time to cover some essential basics that way you guys can start ranking your pages in a decent manner.

Link Building

First things first, there is no such thing as “building links to fast”…..well, almost. Start off building links slowly until you get spidered, once you are spidered post content that will build natural links. Natural links are links that you don’t ask for. Meaning, if I see something I like, I will post it on one of my sites, that is a natural link for whatever site I link to. After the site has been around for a few weeks and is getting spidered regularly by the search engines then you can start snatching links like a crack head does his next hit.

Link Juice

Try to get links from relevant sites. (if you have a site about coca-cola, get links from other coca-cola sites.) These links are worth more and will get you a lot better results then a ton of shitty links. It’s true, with enough shitty links (Brute Force Linking) you can get somewhere, but in all honesty this shit is annoying and it’s the long way of achieving quality rankings.

Domain Age Helps?

YES! The older your domain the easier it is going to be to get ranked (as long as it hasn’t been forwarding to another domain for years etc……) either have just a simple page there or have it parked and dont use it until you are ready to put her to work. I recently had someone come to me with a 10 year old domain that was just a simple page. I turned it into a movie site that gets over 120,000 hits a day from google alone in less then a month. So the domain definitely makes it worth it. Try to have the domain registered for as long as you can too (without breaking your bank) google pays attention to small details and every check mark you can get in your favor helps.

Content

This is going to sound redundant (as you have definitely heard this if you have ever read a SEO blog) Content is key. Content isn’t EVERYTHING, but it IS AN ESSENTIAL PART. Meaning, keep the content UNIQUE. By unique I don’t mean just write random gibberish.  Find something that your site is related to and write about it, don’t copy someone else’s content word for word. Unique content that is updated regularly gets priority in the Goog’s eyes. This is the best thing to do right here.

Every day Update the site a few times a day and certain times. (once at 8 am, once at noon, once at 4pm, once at 8 pm. Google see’s this as a site that actually has someone paying attention to it. Which means they know work is going into it.

Hosting

This one is going to be short, have a decent host that wont have your site going down all the time, it costs you hits and if it is down when google is trying to spider it, they shake their head.

Link Title and Image Alt Tags

Use them, have variations of your keyword in there. If your site is a site about mens health and you have a link on the site, use the title=”" tag and punch in something related to the link and your content. (if linking to a site about mens calf workouts) title=”Calf Workout Routines”. Try to throw in a variation of your keywords that you are trying to rank for, but don’t stuff your site full of unnecessary instances of your target key term.

Keyword Density

Keep it simple, don’t stuff your site full of the terms you are going for. By all means use it, but don’t make it apparent that’s all you are going for. If you have a site about Dogs, the site doesn’t need to have every other word  to be dog. Try to keep the density under 4% ( lot of people say 2% but it has been my experience that 4% and under is just fine)

What To Build For

Build your site for your surfers, not solely for your search engine bots. Mainly because search engines take into effect how long people stay on your site and how often they return. (What!?! They can’t do that can they?! Fuck Yes They CAN!!!! You have heard of the google toolbar and the yahoo toolbar. I guarantee you that they are monitoring those variables using those applications.

rel=”nofollow”

If you are linking to another site, that is not one of your own, use the rel=”nofollow” tag that way you don’t pass any of your link juice on to the other sites…(unless they are friends of yours and you genuinely want to pass some help to them)

Page Rank

Ignore it. I have had pr0 pages that are identical as far as structure but different content rank a billion times higher then pr4+ sites. Why is this? Because the PR that you see in the Google tool bar is 3 months old! The Google algorithm updates the sites PR live when it’s ranking SERPS.  By the time you see the PR on the tool bar it is already differently most likely

Use these tips and your sites rankings will increase significantly
